Welcome Back!

We are off to a very busy start in GATE classes. I am pleased with the number of students that have come to class prepared with their notebooks/binders and pencils. Please check with your child on their GATE day to be sure they have the necessary supplies. Also, please check the binders each week for returned papers. If would be helpful if you would go over the Math Rules and Logic papers on a weekly basis and have the students explain the processes they used to work through their papers. Also, make sure they understand any problems they may have missed after we have gone over the papers. If they are still having problems, please let me know.

Working Hard

All of the classes are hard at work on their new units. The first and second graders are reading Fairy Tales and completing Travel Tickets that tell the elements common to all Fairy Tales. They will complete 6 Travel Tickets before writing their own Fairy Tale. The 3rd and 4th graders are going back in time to Ancient Egypt to learn about life at that time. They have been divided into Nomes (groups) and have completed their Nome standards, menat necklaces, and learned how to dress like an Egyptian. The have been assigned individual projects that they will present to the class on Feb. 28th to teach the rest of the class about theiir assigned topic. I am sure we will learn a great deal about life along the Nile. It has also been a perfec time to talk about present day Egypt and the news making the headlines. The 5th graders are about to complete the unit on Clipper ships and the California Gold Rush. It has been an exciting race and we can't wait to see who wins! This group also started a unit on Feudal Japan and the students are learning about the history of Japan as their Armies try to take over all of Japan so they can become the Shogun.

Schedule Change

Beginning next week their will be a schedule change for the second graders. All second graders will come to GATE classes on Thursday. Please come visit if you have an opportunity.

Hi everyone!

Hi everyone! Just wanted to check in and let you know that I am doing better each day. I am still working hard in therapy and the knee is bending a little more each week. I still have not met the 130 degrees that my Doctor has set for me but I hope to be there soon! I miss you all very much and have been checking in with Mrs. Carreker every week to see how things are going. She tells me that the new units are going great and you all are working hard. Please keep up the good work!
Love,
Mrs. McLean

Sail America Expo

We invited our homeroom classes to come visit the Sail America Expo. Each student was asked to visit all the colonies for a presentation and chose their favorite colony. The colony who had the most people sign up to visit in fourth grade was Hannah and in third grade there was a tie between Lily and Zayin.

Our Zookeepers are busy, busy, busy!

Our first and second grade GATE students are studying a unit on the zoo. They must carefully work together to save all the animals from being taken away by the Mayor and City Council. Each morning, they must carefully inspect the cages to see if the Mayor was able to sabatoge the cages. If the dangerous items are not found, our animals are taken away and given to other zoos. By working hard to raise five million "zoo" dollars, we will be able to renovate the zoo with natural habits instead of cages with bars. Be sure to ask your little "zookeeper" all about this fun and exciting unit!

Morgan had to say good-bye to the monkey.

Thanks to Cale's hard work, the monkey was later returned to our zoo. YEAH Cale!
